The joy of Terrasses

Every spring, there’s a day that terrasses are over flowing with happy people. That day is never the same calendar day. The weather is the deciding factor. This day happens when everyone arrives to the same conclusion. It’s a spur of the moment idea that arises in light of a warmer afternoon. Winter is now behind. The sunshine and warm air is a calling to rejoice. Similar to a bear coming out of hibernation, the Quebecer looks up to the sun and thinks:  The terrasse season is open.

It is this collective idea that unites quebecers in thinking:   let’s enjoy a moment outdoors together. There is a serendipity in asking a work colleague that happens to be available to join you for a 5@7. Other times, it’s a quick invite to some friends you haven’t seen for a while in joining you to by eating or drinking outside.  No matter with whom or when, the unconscious objective is to mark the passing of the season and celebrate the arrival of spring.

After the first terrasses, there is a secondary phenomena.
This is another tell-tale sign of spring that accompanies terrasses. It’s when women feel it’s warm enough to wear skirts. It’s a sudden shift. As if a whole section of the wardrobe was now available. Quebec women choose to wear that skirt or dress that has been waiting for the arrival of a new season.
